What to expect.

While we don't know where we will live yet or exactly how long we will be away--here is a little bit of information about Stan's procedure--`
A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is a procedure where normal blood forming cells from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or cord blood are infused into a person (Stan) whose own bone marrow has been damaged or destroyed by disease or chemotherapy.Stan is receiving an allogenic transplant , which means he is getting a transplant from an unrelated donor.
Because his immune system will have been pretty much destryed by the pretreatment conditioning, Stan will be in a Protected Environment Unit during the initial part of the transplant process. I will be able to syay with him in the hospital most of the time.
The actual "transplant" is more like a blood transfusion. Of course we are most optimistic that Stan's body will accept the new cells. ! We will probably be in the hospital for about two weeks then move to a nearby apartment. My role is to be the "caregiver/slave".
We will need to remain in Texas and near MD Anderson for about 100 days after the transplant for Stan to go in for daily appointments.
Please feel free to ask us any questions and if you know someone else in this situation, we would also be glad to talk with them.
